As the beautiful summer season comes to greet us, we can all rejoice that the time for hiking, camping, and visiting beaches has once again returned. After a long winter, there is nothing better than spending a little time sun-kissed in beautiful warm summer air. For most of us, this means that it is time to spend every free hour outdoors, and there is no one who likes being outdoors with you more than your favorite family pet!

Summer is a great season for dogs who are ready to get out and explore the great outdoors with their people, but with this comes a new set of responsibilities built around keeping your furry friend safe and comfortable!

The biggest concern when it comes to pets in the summer season is without question the heat. Dogs are prone to heatstroke in the wrong weather conditions, and when you have a fur coat, those conditions have a tendency to arrive sooner than we humans would expect.

As a general rule, no pet should ever be left in the car during the summer season, even if only for a few minutes. The amount of pets that die in hot cars by well-intentioned owners thinking that it would not be a problem is devastating, so just don’t risk it.

Cars are not the only places that get hot in summer, which means you don’t want to leave your furry friend in direct sunlight for extended periods of time either. Dogs should always have access to shade and water so that they can help to regulate their internal body temperature. This is particularly important on visits to the beach to make sure that your dog doesn’t drink too much salt water, which can cause multiple health problems ranging from an upset stomach to actual poisoning, and even leading to death on stream cases. Making sure that your favorite little pal is safe and hydrated very is important in the summer season. Well, and some days it is simply just better to leave your furry friend safely indoors with the air conditioning on, right?

When it comes to preparing your pet for the summer season, you will want to think about their physical needs. If you have a dog with a thick fur coat and you live somewhere that gets hot, you will want to consider getting them a haircut so they can handle the heat a little better. Transversely, dogs with minimal fur protection might get sun spots, so find them a nice shady place to lay down.

The summer sun is also known to “cook” the concrete, which can be damaging to puppy sensitive paws. So please don’t let your dog run around on any scalding concrete and consider using protective measures on their paws for long hikes. If you are going to be spending time out in the woods, it is a good idea to check with your vet to see which vaccines might benefit your pet in the event they get bit by ticks, mosquitos or other insects. These simple tricks can help make sure that your dog has a safe summer!

Your best furry friend is without question just as excited about the fact that it is summer as you are. This is why you want to make sure that you are taking the necessary steps to ensure that your pet has the best possible experience while you go out and explore the world together. With a little extra preventative care, you and your pack will be summer ready and can enjoy that beautiful warm weather!

Enjoy your summer!

Until next time, all we need is love (and a dog!)
